Whenever someone brings up the changes in the modern workplace that have taken place over the last few years, they seem to instantly become the target of anger from both men and women. Why? It’s not like the problem of how to improve gender equality in the workplace is a new one.

Understanding Changes In The Modern Workplace

In some ways it’s understandable—the system is broken. For hundreds of years, men worked in men-only workplaces that were designed for them and only them. The few women who did manage to find a place there acted enough like men that they didn’t make too many waves. Nobody thought about how to improve gender equality in the workplace because they didn’t see it as necessary.

Nowadays, millions of women are entering the workforce who are not like men at all. They may have a much less direct and assertive interpersonal style, and they may want to have children. The current system wasn’t designed to take the load of these changes and has disintegrated under the strain. Changes in the modern workplace are coming whether we like it or not.

How To Improve Gender Equality in the Workplace

The gap between men and women isn’t just the result of male entitlement, but accelerating social change is forcing the issue wide open. Workplaces will have to accommodate both sexes if we as a society are to meet our economic needs going forward. For women at work, this means adequate provision for child birth and child care. Men should have the option of parental leave as well.

These changes in modern workplaces have the potential to bring a better future for everyone. In an increasingly diverse and globally-conscious world, companies with limited viewpoints will go under. We all need to figure out how to improve gender equality in the workplace—not only because it’s the right thing to do, but because it makes economic sense.
