Some people—men and women—might ask, “Is gender equality still relevant?” Didn’t we accomplish all we needed twenty years ago? After all, women don’t need a male co-signer anymore when they want to open a bank account with their own money. They can go to the college of their choice. They can even enter into former “old boys clubs” to golf and network with the men.

What Is Gender Equality In The Modern World?

Young women especially might not see a need for feminism to continue fighting for gender equality. They look around and see a fairly equal world. Depending on their industry, they might see a 50/50 gender distribution, with men and women being paid about the same. “What wage gap?” they ask.

And it’s true, the view from an entry-level job can look equal. There are a lot of women in entry-level jobs. But as you ascend higher and higher up the corporate ladder you’ll see fewer and fewer women. Less than 6.4% of Fortune 500 companies have female CEOs. Doesn’t look so equal now, does it?

Is Gender Equality Still relevant?

Are you still asking, “Is gender equality still relevant?” Women’s equality and the fight for pay equality are as important now as they ever were. Sure, we’re no longer treated like property or incompetent children, but there’s a long way still to go. Why does gender equality matter? Because women want what men have always had— the right to make our own decisions.
